The Understory works to grow resilient futures from the forest floor up, rooted in places and communities within the Hudson Valley.

OUR BELIEFS

Our mission is to catalyze regional ecological and social action.

Environmental and social crises are best addressed by the communities closest to them. At The Understory (formerly Partners for Climate Action), we empower local leaders and grantees with the knowledge, tools, and connections necessary to make a real impact.

OUR APPROACH

We believe in interdependence.

The Hudson Valley is an inextricably connected natural system. With this in mind, The Understory supports communities across the region to care for their local environments in ways that reflect each place’s unique character, while also contributing to a healthier, more interconnected region.

OUR WORK

Here are a few of the strategic ways we foster resilience across the Hudson Valley:

Grantmaking
Since 2020, we’ve deployed over $6 million in support to programs and grantees in our bioregion, with an emphasis on funding for projects in disadvantaged communities.

Hands-On Guides & Resources
We produce resources and case studies to support ecological biodiversity, with an emphasis on pollinator health.

Civic Engagement
We offer training, funding, and technical assistance to municipalities committed to advancing sustainability efforts within their town/city. Through our initiatives, we use cohort-based programs to convene changemakers.

Sustainable Spaces
We recognize public spaces as crucial social hubs that foster connection within communities. We’ve partnered with local libraries to expand access to tools, knowledge, and opportunities—and to strengthen regional relationships. Past grants have also bolstered and restored civic and religious spaces to live on for future generations.
